Memorial’s History

Baseball -The Joseph Bona Memorial Baseball Award

Joseph F. Bona was the Swedesboro High School Athletic Director from 1927 -1963. He won championships as the head coach in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was the Kingsway High School Athletic Director and baseball coach from 1963 to 1969. He was a TCC president. Mr. Bona was selected to the New Jersey State Football Hall of Fame, the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame, and the South Jersey Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Field Hockey – The Madelyn M. Chiomento Memorial Field Hockey Award

Madelyn “Bunny” attended Abington High School and Temple University. She ended her 40-year coaching career in 1993 as the winning’s high school field hockey coach in the United States. Thirty-seven of those years were spent at Pitrnan High School. Her win-loss record stands at 412-105-88. She had four (4) State championship teams, nineteen (19) TCC championships, and thirty-five (35) consecutive winning seasons. Madelyn was voted Coach of the Year in South Jersey in 1984 and 1993. She was inducted into seven (7) hall of fame organizations: Temple University, Pitman High School, Abington High School, Gloucester County, National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches, National High School, and the PA Sports Hall of Fame.

Football – The Pop Kramer Memorial Football Award

Charles “Pop” Kramer was the first Athletic Director and Coach of football at Clayton Middle/High School. He was a Co-Founder of the Tri-County Conference.

Track and Field -The Bill Ellis Memorial Track Award

Track and Cross Country coach at Penns Grove HS from 1930 to 1956.

Cross Country -Roy Bloomingdale Memorial Cross Country Award

Bloomingdale, who served as Pitman High School’s athletic director from 1962-1973, is best known for his work in scholastic track and field. Following brief careers at Milville and Ocean City, the Glassboro High graduate coached Pitman’s runners from 1950-193. He is still active as a track official in South Jersey and is a member of the South Jersey Coaches Hall of Fame and the Glassboro High School Hall of Fame.
